MARKETPLACE MVP CASE STUDY

Matching students to the right tutor, in the right time zone

We built a tutor marketplace focused on subject-level expertise matching and cross-time-zone scheduling — so students find a tutor who actually teaches what they need, at a time that actually works.

Built around getting the match right before getting the booking fast

Generic tutor directories let students filter by 'Math' or 'English' and little else, which puts the burden of finding real expertise fit back on the student. We built this MVP around subject-level matching — specific topics, skill levels and teaching styles — so the search itself does more of the qualifying work before a student ever messages a tutor.

With tutors and students often in different time zones, scheduling had to convert availability into the student's local time automatically, rather than leaving both sides to do time-zone math manually before every session.

The Challenge

Subject filters too broad to be useful

Searching by general subject alone doesn't tell a student whether a tutor actually specializes in the specific topic or level they're struggling with.

Time zone confusion derailing bookings

Students and tutors spread across regions were miscommunicating availability, leading to missed or awkwardly rescheduled sessions.

Comparing tutors on inconsistent information

Without a structured profile format, students had no consistent way to judge one tutor's expertise against another's.

What We Can Identified

A matching and scheduling experience built around subject specificity and time zone clarity, not just a searchable list of tutors.

Tutor marketplace subject-matching and session scheduling interface

Topic and skill-level search

Students search by specific topic and proficiency level, surfacing tutors who specialize in exactly what they need help with.

Structured tutor expertise profiles

Tutors list subjects, levels taught and teaching approach in a consistent format, letting students compare expertise directly rather than guessing from a bio.

Time-zone-converted availability

Tutor availability displays automatically in the student's local time, removing the manual conversion that causes missed sessions.

Integrated session booking and payment

Students move from finding a matching tutor to a confirmed, paid session in one flow, without a separate back-and-forth to lock in a time.

Session history and progress notes

Students and tutors can reference past session notes, so returning students don't have to re-explain where they left off.

Rescheduling with time-zone awareness

When a session needs to move, both sides see proposed times already converted to their own time zone, cutting down scheduling errors.

How MVPHUB Delivered It

1

Subject taxonomy design

We defined a subject and skill-level structure specific enough that search results reflect genuine expertise fit.

2

Tutor profile structuring

We built profiles around subjects, levels and teaching style so students can compare tutors on consistent terms.

3

Time-zone scheduling build

We implemented availability display and booking logic that converts times automatically for both student and tutor.

4

Booking-to-payment flow

We connected matching, scheduling and payment into one continuous flow rather than separate disconnected steps.

5

Validation across time-zone scenarios

We tested scheduling with students and tutors in different regions to confirm availability and booking held up correctly.

We treated subject matching and time zone handling as the two problems that actually determine whether a session gets booked.

Engineering Behind The Experience

Structured subject taxonomy

Search and profiles are built against a defined subject and skill-level structure, not free-text descriptions.

Time-zone-normalized scheduling

All availability and booking times are converted and displayed in each user's own local time zone.

Single booking-to-payment flow

Matching, scheduling and payment are handled in one connected flow, reducing drop-off between steps.

The Outcome

Before: Guesswork instead of a real subject match

× Students filtered by broad subject with no way to confirm real expertise fit

× Tutor availability required manual time-zone conversion prone to error

× Tutor profiles varied in format, making comparison inconsistent

× Session history existed nowhere, so context was lost between sessions

After: Matched by topic, scheduled without time-zone confusion

✓ Students search by specific topic and skill level to find genuinely matching tutors

✓ Availability displays automatically in the student's own local time

✓ Tutor profiles present expertise in a consistent, comparable format

✓ Session notes carry forward so returning students don't restart from zero

What This Unlocks

Fewer missed sessions caused by time-zone miscommunication
A stronger sense that the platform found the 'right' tutor, not just 'a' tutor
A foundation ready to scale across more subjects and regions

Learning that starts with the right match, not a lucky guess

Time-zone confusion and vague subject filters are quiet reasons students churn before they ever get real value from a tutor.

By making subject-level matching and time-zone-aware scheduling the center of the MVP, students reach a tutor who actually fits their need, at a time that's actually workable for both sides.

THE MVPHUB PRINCIPLE

"

A tutor marketplace isn't a list of profiles — it's the matching logic and the clock math that decide whether a session ever happens.
