What is the difference between indirect competitors and substitutes?
An indirect competitor solves the same underlying problem in a different way (e.g. a generalist tool vs your specialist one). A substitute is a non-software option — a manual process, a spreadsheet, or simply tolerating the problem.
Why include "do nothing" as a competitor?
For most problems, the majority of the target audience is not using any dedicated tool — they are tolerating the problem or using a workaround. That is usually your largest competitor by user count.
How many competitors should a complete map have?
