How it works

1

Show each variation to real users

Run the comparison yourself — side by side or sequentially — and ask which they prefer and why, in their own words.

2

Log the vote and the reason

Each line captures which variation won and a short keyword summarising the reasoning behind that choice.

3

Surface the winning pattern

Votes are tallied per variation and reasons are grouped by keyword frequency, showing not just which design won but why.

Frequently asked questions

Does Preference Lab show the designs to testers?

No — you present the variations yourself using any method (screenshots, a slide deck, a live prototype) and record the results here.

How many variations can I compare?

Any number — list as many distinct variation names as you tested, and the tool tallies votes and reasons for each one.

What if a tester gives multiple reasons?

Pick the strongest one per vote, or log the tester twice with different reason keywords if you want both captured separately.

Is a majority vote enough to decide?

For a small sample, treat it as a signal, not a verdict — pair it with the reasons given and your own judgment before committing to a redesign.
