How the RICE Score Works
- Estimate reach. How many users will this feature touch in a given period (e.g. per quarter)?
- Rate impact. Choose a multiplier from minimal (0.25) to massive (3) for how much it moves the needle per user who encounters it.
- Rate confidence. How sure are you of your Reach and Impact estimates? Lower your confidence percentage if you're guessing.
- Estimate effort. How many person-weeks will it take to build? We divide by effort so cheap, high-impact features rise to the top.

What does RICE stand for?
Reach, Impact, Confidence and Effort — a feature prioritization framework popularized by Intercom. It gives every feature idea a single comparable score instead of relying on gut feel or the loudest voice in the room.
How is the RICE score calculated?
RICE Score = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort. Reach is the number of users affected in a period (e.g. per quarter), Impact is a multiplier (0.25 to 3) for how much it moves the needle per user, Confidence is a percentage reflecting how sure you are about your Reach and Impact estimates, and Effort is the cost in person-weeks.
What if two features have similar scores?
Treat close scores as a tie and use judgment — sequencing dependencies, technical risk, or strategic fit can reasonably break a near-tie that the formula alone cannot resolve.
Where do the Reach and Effort numbers come from?
Use your best estimate — actual usage data if you have it (e.g. active users per quarter who would touch this feature), or an informed guess if you are pre-launch. The tool is only as good as the inputs; revisit scores as you get real data.
Should I only build the top-ranked feature?
Not necessarily — RICE ranks by return on effort, not by what makes a coherent MVP. Use the ranking as a strong prioritization signal, then sanity-check the resulting shortlist forms a usable, shippable first version.
