How it works

1

Enter the handling details

Provide the number of handoffs, elapsed transport or holding time, the specimen type's stability window, and any missed scan checkpoints.

2

We calculate a custody risk score

Handoff count, the percentage of the stability window already consumed, and missed checkpoints are each scored and capped, then combined into a 0-100 result.

3

Get a matched follow-up action

The recommended next step scales from standard processing to flagging the specimen for an immediate chain-of-custody exception review.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool actually scan or track specimens in real time?

No. This is a scoring calculator only — you enter figures manually and it estimates logistics risk. No real barcode scanning, GPS tracking, or live specimen monitoring occurs.

How is the stability window used in the score?

Elapsed time is expressed as a percentage of the specimen type's stability window. The closer that percentage gets to (or past) 100%, the higher the contribution to the risk score.

Why do missed checkpoints weigh so heavily?

A missed scan checkpoint represents a direct gap in the tracked chain of custody, which is a more serious logistics concern than elapsed time or handoff count alone.

Does this replace our LIMS (lab information management system)?

No. It is a quick, standalone risk estimate for one specimen. Your LIMS remains the system of record for actual specimen scanning, status, and chain-of-custody documentation.

Is this a clinical or diagnostic judgment about specimen validity?

No. This is an operational and administrative planning aid to help flag logistics risk for follow-up, not medical, clinical, or diagnostic advice. It does not diagnose specimen viability and does not store or transmit any real patient data — all calculation happens client-side in your browser with no backend involved.

What should I do if the risk score is high?

Treat it as a prompt to manually verify the specimen's condition and location with your lab or courier team — the score itself does not confirm anything about the specimen.
