What if my velocity varies a lot sprint to sprint?

Use a 3-sprint rolling average instead of a single sprint's number — single-sprint velocity is noisy and will skew this forecast.

Does this account for scope added mid-project?

No. This forecasts against the backlog size you enter today. Re-run it whenever the backlog grows or shrinks materially.

Why is there a contingency built in?

Velocity commonly dips due to onboarding, holidays, or unexpected complexity. A 15% buffer keeps the forecast realistic.
