How it works

1

Enter exam history and interval

Months since the last exam and the recommended base recall interval (12 or 24 months) set the starting point.

2

Risk factors shorten the interval

Diabetes, high myopia or another progressive condition, family history, and age over 60 each shorten the effective interval by 10%, capped at 40%.

3

Get a recall priority score

The tool divides months elapsed by the risk-adjusted interval to show how close — or overdue — a patient is for their next recall.

Frequently asked questions

How is the recall priority score calculated?

It divides months since the last exam by an effective recall interval — the base interval (12 or 24 months) reduced by 10% per risk factor present, capped at a 40% reduction. A score of 100% or more means the patient has passed their adjusted recall date.

Why do risk factors shorten the interval instead of adding points?

Recall guidance for higher-risk patients (diabetic, high myopia, family history of eye disease, over 60) commonly recommends earlier follow-up, so the tool models that as a shorter effective interval rather than a separate penalty score.

Can I use this for a whole patient list at once?

This calculator checks one patient at a time. For batch recall list management across your full patient base, use a dedicated practice management or recall system.

Does this replace my clinical judgement on recall timing?

No. This is an operational planning aid to help prioritise outreach, not a clinical recommendation. Recall intervals and risk weighting should always be set or confirmed by the treating optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Is this a medical or diagnostic tool?

No. This is an operational and administrative planning aid only — it does not diagnose any condition and is not medical advice. All calculation happens client-side in your browser; no patient data is stored or transmitted anywhere.

What should I do with a patient scoring as overdue?

Prioritise them in your next outreach batch and confirm their contact details are current before sending a recall reminder.
