How it works
-
Collect competitor review quotes
Gather quotes or close paraphrases from app stores, G2, Reddit, support forums, or sales call notes.
-
Tag competitor, theme, and sentiment
For each quote, name the competitor, a short theme label (e.g. "onboarding", "pricing"), and mark it positive, negative, or opportunity.
-
We group and score the themes
Quotes are grouped by matching theme and sentiment, counted, and the overall positive/negative/opportunity split is calculated as a percentage.
-
Focus on the top opportunity themes
Themes tagged "opportunity" most often are ranked first — these are the unmet needs most worth investigating for your MVP.
Turn the gaps you find into a market opening with the Positioning White Space Finder, or read Validate Your Software Idea With Existing Tools First.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as an "opportunity" tag?
Use opportunity for feedback that names something customers wish existed but does not — a feature request, workaround, or complaint about a gap rather than a straightforward dislike. It is distinct from negative feedback about something that does exist but is done poorly.
How is the sentiment percentage calculated?
Each quote you add counts once toward the sentiment you tagged it with. The percentage is that sentiment's share of all valid quotes (quotes with both a theme and quote text filled in).
How does theme grouping work?
Quotes are grouped by matching theme label (case-insensitive, trimmed) combined with sentiment, so "Onboarding" and "onboarding" group together, but a positive and a negative "onboarding" quote form two separate groups.
Where should I source review quotes from?
App store reviews, G2/Capterra, Reddit and niche communities, competitor support forums, and your own sales or customer interviews that mention competitors are all valid, as long as you paraphrase or quote accurately.
Can I use this for my own product reviews too?
Yes. Running it against your own reviews alongside competitors' can highlight where you already win versus where the whole category shares the same gap.
