UX FLOW COMPARISON SCORE

Flow Compare

Enter steps, decision points, and estimated completion time for up to three flow alternatives and get a friction/complexity score that ranks them.

  • Uses your inputs in a transparent calculation
  • Instant result with practical next steps

Planning guidance only. Validate important decisions with customer evidence and your delivery team.

How it works

1

Enter up to three flow alternatives

For each flow, enter its name, number of steps, number of decision points, and estimated completion time in seconds.

2

We calculate a weighted efficiency score

Steps, decision points, and time are each normalized against the flow with the highest value, then combined into one efficiency score per flow.

3

Get a ranked comparison

Flows are ranked from lowest to highest friction, so you can pick the flow to build with evidence instead of a gut call.

Frequently asked questions

Does Flow Compare test my flows with real users?

No. Flow Compare computes a comparative score purely from the step counts, decision points, and time estimates you enter for each flow — it does not run user testing and does not involve any AI/LLM generation step.

Where should my time estimates come from?

Use your best estimate of how long a typical user would take to complete each flow, based on similar flows you have shipped or observed. The comparison is only as good as the estimates you enter.

Can I compare just two flows instead of three?

Yes. Leave Flow C's step count at 0 and it will be excluded from the ranking — the tool compares whichever flows have a non-zero step count.

Why are decision points weighted separately from steps?

A step a user simply reads or confirms is lower-friction than a step that requires a real decision (choosing a plan, entering ambiguous information). Weighting them separately avoids penalizing flows that are long but simple.

The scores are close — what should I do?

A close result usually means the flows are genuinely comparable on paper. At that point, prefer the flow with fewer decision points, since decisions are the more common real-world drop-off cause even when step counts are similar.

Maze runs real usability tests against live prototypes, and FigJam is where flow alternatives get diagrammed and discussed as a team. Flow Compare sits between those steps — a fast, structural comparison to shortlist which flow is worth prototyping and testing first.
