A direct competitor scores high on both serving the same target user and solving the same core problem. Adjacent competitors overlap on one dimension but not both.
Two products can share an audience but solve different problems for them — sharing the exact problem is the stronger signal of direct competition.
Compare their marketing site's stated audience and use case to yours. Sales call mentions of alternatives are a strong real-world signal too.
Only if they genuinely solve the same core problem for the same user — otherwise they usually score low enough to land in 'not a competitor', which is the correct outcome.
