How it works

1

Enter efficiency and consumption figures

Add the vehicle type's expected miles-per-gallon, the actual mileage driven, and the actual fuel consumed for that mileage.

2

We calculate the variance

Expected fuel usage is derived from expected mpg and actual mileage, then compared to actual fuel consumed to get a variance in gallons and percent.

3

Get an anomaly-severity score

Excess consumption above expected scales into a severity score, flagging whether the variance is normal, worth watching, or worth investigating.

Frequently asked questions

Does FuelGuard connect to my fuel-card or telematics system?

No. FuelGuard computes results only from the figures you enter — it does not connect to a real fuel-card system, telematics device, or live vehicle sensors. It is a planning and estimation calculator.

How is the expected fuel usage calculated?

Actual mileage is divided by the expected mpg for that vehicle type, giving the fuel that should have been consumed under normal efficiency — this is then compared to what was actually consumed.

Why does the severity score only react to excess consumption?

Using less fuel than expected is not typically a problem worth flagging, so the severity score focuses on the case that matters operationally — consuming more than expected.

What could explain a high anomaly score besides a fuel-theft concern?

Heavier loads, hilly or congested routes, extended idling, or a mechanical issue can all raise real consumption above the expected baseline — the score flags the variance, it does not diagnose the cause.

Can I use this per trip or only per billing period?

Either works — enter whatever mileage and fuel figures correspond to the period you want to check, trip-level or monthly.
