How it works

1

Enter shipment weight, distance, and mode

Add the shipment weight in tonnes, the distance in kilometers, and select road, rail, sea, or air as the primary transportation mode.

2

We apply a mode-specific emission factor

Each mode has a genuinely different average CO2e-per-tonne-km factor — the tool multiplies your tonne-km by that factor to estimate total emissions.

3

Get an estimated CO2e figure and efficiency score

The result shows estimated kg and tonnes of CO2e, how it compares to an equivalent road shipment, and a relative carbon-efficiency score.

Frequently asked questions

Are these emissions figures measured or estimated?

Estimated. ShipmentCarbon applies standard, publicly known industry-average emission factors per mode — it does not measure actual fuel burn, vehicle efficiency, or route-specific conditions for your shipment.

Where do the emission factors come from?

They reflect commonly cited industry-average ranges for CO2e per tonne-kilometer by mode (similar in spirit to frameworks like GLEC or DEFRA conversion factors), simplified into one representative figure per mode for estimation purposes.

Why does air freight show such a higher estimate than sea?

Air freight has a substantially higher CO2e-per-tonne-km factor than sea or rail due to fuel intensity per unit of cargo moved — this is a well-documented and consistent pattern across industry emissions data.

Can I use this for a multi-leg shipment with different modes?

Run the calculator once per leg using that leg's weight, distance, and mode, then add the resulting CO2e figures together for a total estimate.

Is this suitable for official carbon reporting?

No — for compliance-grade reporting, use a certified carbon-accounting methodology and your actual carrier or fuel data. This tool is for quick directional comparison between shipment options.
